Effects of adrenaline on rabbits eye

( 3 Votes )

Aim of practical:

Purpose of this experiment is to prove the pharmacological action of adrenaline 1% on eyes that are mydriasis, light reflex and corneal reflex.

Theory:

Adrenaline is naturally occurring catecholamine. It is also known as epinephrine. It is synthesized from tyrosine in adrenal medulla and release along with a small quantity of nor-epinephrine into blood stream. Epinephrine interacts with both alpha and beta receptors. At low doses beta effect that is vesodilation of vascular system predominates where as high doses the alpha effect that is vasoconstriction is stronger.

Apparatus:

Scale, Torch, Cotton Whig, Stop watch

Drug used:

Adrenaline 1%

Subject:

Healthy Rabbit

Pharmacological action on eye:

  • Mydriasis
  • Reduction of intraocular pressure
  • Reduction of aqueous humor by constriction of ciliry body

Procedure:

1: Select a healthy rabbit and place it in wooden box in such a way that head is outside the box.

2: Note the normal pupil size, light reflex with help of torch and corneal reflex with a Cotton Whig.

3: One drop of 2% Pilocarpine is instilled into the eye of rabbit and the above parameters are observed at time 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes and 20 minutes.

Precautions:

  • Healthy rabbit should be used.
  • Cotton Whig should be slightly touched with rabbit’s eye.
